Although I am 22 years old, I think I was tinkled pink at the sight of snow! My husband and I joked during the first part of this week about it not actually happening. Honestly, when does it ever snow is south Alabama? Then, when we woke up yesterday morning to yet another rainy view, I gave up all hope. But all to find while on my way to school, the sleet began. You better believe I was one excited girl!
When I arrived at school I looked at my weather app which said the temperature was 36 degrees with a wind chill of 28 degrees. Now, for Alabama, that is some cold stuff. After my first class while walking to another building I checked the app again and the temperature was 34 degrees with a wind chill of 25 degrees. By now, it was snowing and no longer sleeting. Following this class I looked at the app again to see that the temperature was 32 degrees with a wind chill of 23. Can you say, brrr?? Not too much of a drastic change in temperature, although the snow flakes did pick up in a matter of an hour or so to become full throttle the rest of the afternoon. I texted my whole family, LSU friends and my husband who was on the other side of town and not yet experiencing what I was. Overall, I think we received almost 3 inches of snow starting right before lunch and extending until the evening.
Next time there is a snow prediction I definitely will not question or doubt Mother Nature.
Those flakes are pretty awesome if you ask me. I surely have never ever never seen snow fall as fast and as large as in this photo.
Per yesterday's events, I learned many things.
I am not cut out for the snow life, y'all. It is extremely thrilling until you realize you are soaking wet and freezing cold. And, I ruined my favorite pair of Target boots.
Not everyone gets excited about snow in south Alabama. Some will go as far to cuss at you because you may look excited. Others will honk their horn at you like there is no tomorrow.
Birmingham traffic is ridiculous when it snows. Especially, if you are in downtown. For future reference, I will be sure to find an alternate route instead of sitting in my car for 3 hours attempting to make a 10 mile commute.
This may sound weird but for once I actually looked into the cars that I was passing and saw the faces of the individuals. Some people were stressed (either because of the road conditions, snow, or traffic) and others were extremely excited and truly happy. This may sound awkward but it was nice to slow down and really see others and how they embraced the unexpected events of the afternoon.
Sleet is a funny thing. I learned that you cannot drive the full speed limit while it is sleeting because those of us in the south do not have compatible breaks or tires. However, snow is even worse. I may or may have almost had two wrecks.
And, I mean, how ironic is his license plate?
iPhones do not work during cold, snowy weather. My phone died like 4 times just because there were snow flakes on the screen.
But that could also probably be contributed to the fact that I was no longer using my faulty umbrella and taking photos each step of my journey from class to class.
Umbrellas do not guard your body from snow, as with rain drops. Pretty much, an umbrella is useless.
Also, next time snow is predicted I will be better prepared with gloves and a hat. I praise the Lord that I decided to grab my pea coat last minute before walking out the door. Otherwise, my rain jacket would not have cut it. Thankfully, I also had on a pretty thick sweater and a scarf. Unfortunately, my boots are toast.
Admittedly, at lunch I was "that girl" standing outside eating Taco Bell and taking video and pictures non stop to send to all my LSU friends and family in Louisiana.
During all the hoopla, I actually connected with my aunt who lives about an hour north of New Orleans and found out that she even had snow at her house early yesterday morning. Although it did not stick, at least many people experienced a little excitement through the day all across the south. Hopefully, not too many experienced trials or trouble with extended problems. I pray everyone got home safely, too!
I hope you all enjoyed the photos! I had fun while it lasted! :)
Today, the sun decided to make an appearance! Praise the LORD!! I was thinking we would never see the sun again! I truly have forgotten the last time it was out. It is a bit warmer today, too! We can cancel all plans to build that ark. I think the Lord may want us to stick around a bit longer.
Happy Friday!
Until next time, Happy Blogging!
PS- Tomorrow I am bringing you "Confessions of A New Wife".... Good stuff! I hope you will come back!
